Carowinds Recognizes Black Leaders Making an Impact

February 15, 2023

Black History Month and African American Heritage Month originated in the United States as a time to recognize the triumphs and tribulations of African Americans throughout history. In honor of Black History Month, Carowinds strives to recognize and honor the Black and African American leaders throughout the park who strive to inspire change every day.

Jabez Ford

Jabez Ford joined Carowinds in 2017 as an associate at Harbor House, Carolina Harbor Waterpark’s flagship dining location. After six months and a variety of titles and dining locations, Ford was promoted to area manager, food and beverage. In this role, he oversees the operation of dining locations on the North Carolina-side of the park, including the guest-favorite locations Burrito Café and Juke Box Diner.

“I enjoy interacting with guests from all backgrounds and knowing that I can have a positive impact on their day-to-day lives,” said Ford.

Associates describe him as passionate, committed, and the true embodiment of Carowinds’ ‘One Team’ motto. Ford encourages his staff to take the next step towards promotion.

“There are no limits to what you can do in this world,” said Ford.

Ford advises the next generation of Black leaders to “show your true colors, show people what you are made of, and give the world your heart.”

During Black History Month and African American Heritage Month, Ford encourages others to take a deep dive into Black history to understand what they had to overcome.

Jennifer Rollins

Jennifer Rollins started at Carowinds in 2004 as a season pass enrollment associate. The next year, she began her leadership journey which ultimately resulted in her current position as area manager, human resources.

“I’m very passionate about helping others,” said Rollins.

She recalls memorable moments at the park where associates have shared their life and career opportunities with her, seeking advice and guidance. Rollins’ coworkers say that her goal is for everyone to succeed. She is known to encourage and motivate others to achieve success.

Rollins yearns for future Black leaders to continue to believe in themselves and stand in their truth, recognizing the importance of surrounding themselves with a circle of encouraging individuals.

“Be confident knowing you are the pioneers for the next generation,” Rollins said. “You are Black history.”

Antawan Smith

In 2015, Antawan Smith was hired as a ride photo associate during Fury 325’s debut season. Today, he holds the title of location manager for the merchandise team. Smith finds enjoyment in meeting a multitude of guests and associates at the park each day. He also cherishes the opportunity to assist with the training and development of other associates and leadership.

“Helping people grow and develop has been my passion for as long as I can remember,” said Smith.

He encourages everyone to celebrate Black History Month and African American Heritage Month by taking time to recognize the contributions that have been made to our society through culture, infrastructure, technology, entertainment, and more.

“Never give up, and do not let anything or anyone discourage you from accomplishing all that you desire,” said Smith.

Kayla Dixon

Kayla Dixon joined the Carowinds team in 2017 as an admissions associate. After working through various leadership positions, Dixon was offered a role with the workforce management team in 2021. In this role, she works in Carowinds’ One Team Center using various processes to optimize the park’s labor and associate schedules.

“I love meeting new people and learning new things,” said Dixon.

Associates describe her as passionate, eager to learn, and always willing to step up and help where needed. Dixon wants everyone to educate themselves on Black history and culture.

She quotes Yvette Clarke, “We must never forget that Black history is American history. The achievements of African Americans have contributed to our nation’s greatness.”

Dixon encourages the next generation of Black leaders to continue to be themselves and stand their ground.

“Never let anyone make you feel like you don’t belong,” she said.
