In a grand spectacle on March 31, 1973, Carowinds made its dazzling debut to the delight of 6,000 eager guests. Over the years, Carowinds has undergone significant changes, including the addition and removal of various rides and attractions, and yet some opening day icons continue. Among the original attractions that still operate today are the Carolina Skytower, Scrambler, Snoopy's Junction, and Carolina Goldrusher. Five decades later, guests will experience the iconic border between North Carolina and South Carolina anew when Carowinds celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Carolina Skytower: An Iconic Observation Tower

Carolina Skytower, created by renowned Swiss manufacturer Intamin, stands as an extraordinary observation tower. This attraction boasts an air-conditioned cabin that ascends the impressive 262-foot tower. Upon reaching the summit, the cabin rotates and offers guests a breathtaking panoramic view of Carowinds, the Charlotte city skyline, and the distant mountains.

Unveiling the Story Above the Clouds

Originally sponsored by Eastern Airlines, the ride was initially named the Ionosphere Tower, paying homage to the airline's exclusive Ionosphere Club, located at Charlotte Douglas International Airport—a major Eastern Airlines hub at the time.

When Taft Broadcasting acquired Carowinds in 1975, the ride was renamed the Eastern Airlines Skytower. The new owners prioritized adding attractions that appealed to younger visitors, including a smaller version of the Skytower in the children's area called Kiddie Skytower. Manufactured by Intamin as well, and branded by Eastern Airlines, Kiddie Skytower offered young thrill-seekers a taste of the towering adventure.

During the 1980s, the Eastern Airlines branding was phased out, and the ride became known as the Carowinds Skytower. In 1993, with Paramount acquiring ownership of the park, the ride received its current name, Carolina Skytower.

Carolina Skytower Today: A Timeless Family Favorite

Even after 50 years, Carolina Skytower remains a beloved attraction at Carowinds, captivating families with its stunning views and relaxed pace. As the cabin ascends, a voiceover recounts Carowinds' vibrant history, allowing park icons to come to life before your eyes. In honor of the 50th anniversary, the historical narration has been updated to pay tribute to the past five decades of thrilling experiences on the state line.
