The Insider's Guide to SCarowinds

SCarowinds is in full swing, and as the 31st approaches the Halloween event becomes more popular. With that in mind, we racked the brains of our SCarowinds experts for the best tips and tricks to make the most of your trip!

#1: Get a selfie with the Overlord

Our brand new opening show, Overlord's Awakening, begins at 7 pm at the Plaza Stage. When the show concludes, the Overlord will hang around for about 15 minutes to take photos! If you miss him, keep a watchful eye as you travel around the park. He will go on patrol later in the evening and be available again for photos. We know how scary he looks, but don't be afraid to approach him - he likes the attention!

#2: Wait on the rides

If your goal is to tackle all the mazes and scare zones in one night, our best advice would be to wait on the rides. Get through all of SCarowinds' haunted attractions first, and once you're finished, get those night rides in!

#3: Take on the park in a counterclockwise path

After taking a photo with the Overlord, head through Carousel Park to experience The Hollow and Blood Yard scare zones, as well as our two Thrill Zone haunted mazes - Silver Scream Studios: Condemned (below Fury 325) and Slaughterhouse: The Final Cut (near Hurler and Drop Tower). These are two of our most popular mazes, so we would recommend doing them first! Between the haunted mazes (or after you finish both), consider taking a short break to watch Blood Drums.

Afterwards, head through Carolina Boardwalk to take on our new Grave Walkers scare zone, and continue through Deadman's Landing scare zone (on the border of County Fair and Blue Ridge Junction) and Carnevil scare zone (beside Dodg'ems) to reach your third maze, Dark Harvest. From there, head through Crossroads and Outlaw's Revenge scare zone back into Blue Ridge Junction. From here, the choice is yours - stop for a bite to eat and catch our new Bone Brigade show? Head to our Urgent Scare maze? Go through our new Age of Darkenss scare zone and back to the front of the park to watch Skeleton Crew? It all depends on your timing and your preferences!

No matter the order of events you choose, make sure you don't accidentally miss our Depths of Darkness maze (near the entrance to Camp Snoopy), Fleet Street scare zone (next to Harmony Hall), and our new closing show, Overlord's Revenge. To help you navigate the park, pick up a SCarowinds map on your way in or click here (and select "Map") to view the digital version.

#4: Come on a Sunday

If you're looking to experience the smallest crowds on your visit, we recommend visiting on a Sunday. Because this is a school night, there will be less people in the park, which means even more scares for you!

#5: Don't be afraid to ask questions

If you have a question, you can approach any of our personnel wearing bright yellow shirts. These yellow shirts indicate they are part of our SCarowinds staff and are there to help you. If they can't answer your question, they will find someone who can.

#6: Interact with the monsters!

Our monsters are known for their scares, but that doesn't mean they won't interact with you in other ways! Here's a list of suggestions for what to say (and not to say) to our voracious villains:

  • In Age of Darkness, ask the Axe Troll near the castle entrance to ‘play a game’.
  • Ask any zombie in Grave Walkers how they died, and they'll tell you how it happened.
  • While avoiding being their next meal, ask the vampires in Blood Yard what horde they belong to and who their sworn enemies are (they may even call out another enemy horde if you ask nice enough!).
  • In Outlaws Revenge you can talk to the sheriff, who sees “nothing wrong” in his outlaw ridden town...
  • Also in Outlaws Revenge, find the leader of the outlaws, Harvey, and inquire about his master plan.
  • In The Hollow you should be careful not to talk too loud about carving pumpkins. Many of the pumpkin people will not take kindly to that.
  • If you encounter the Overlord and his Terror Team as they circle the park to feed off everyone’s terror and screams, get a photo with him and ask for a ‘close up’.

#7: Take your time

Remember, above all else, that SCarowinds is supposed to be an experience. So, take some time to appreciate the handiwork and attention to detail in our mazes and scare zones and admire the talent of all our performers. If you rush through each area of the park, you'll miss out on so much of what makes SCarowinds one of the absolute best things to do for Halloween!
