Carowinds' Carolina Harbor water park opens for the season this summer. Soon the water park's newest addition (and first since the transformation into Carolina Harbor), Boogie Board Racer, the longest mat-racing water slide in the southeast, will tower near the water park's entrance. Take an inside look at the construction of this all-new attraction.
Manufactured by Vancouver-based slide specialists White Water West, Boogie Board Racer's guests will ascend to nearly 60 feet, grab a mat, and choose one of multi-colored six lanes where they’ll wait for the green light to begin an exhilarating, competitive ride. Racers will zoom through tubes, high-speed chutes and a thrilling 360-degree horizontal loop.
Construction of the new mat racer has begun, and we got a behind the scenes look!
Starting at the bottom of the slides, a pit has been dug to house the "surge pool," which will recycle the slide's water back to the top of the slide. There is no "splash pool," and instead the riders will exit the slides at the end of their individual lanes.
The location of Boogie Board Racer, adjacent to Copperhead Strike, is still very much a construction site. Concrete bases are sprouting out of the ground, which will support the slide structures.
During our visit, water lines were being installed under the structure to help transport the water back to the top of the slide.
The concrete base for the slide tower was also being worked on. The concrete was being leveled. The horizontal layer of rebar reinforces the slide tower.
Construction in progress! The plan was to go vertical with steel supports in early March.
Out in the parking lot, the fiberglass tubes that make up Boogie Board Racer's slide were being staged for installation.
The checkered flag pattern at the bottom of the slide is a subtle nod to the racing history found in the Carolinas.
The slides are being pre-constructed in segments on ground level to expedite the construction process.
Crews are working hard to get the slide constructed!
A portion of the support steel for the slide tower and slides was laid out. More steel was scheduled to be delivered soon.
Boogie Board Racer is scheduled to open in Summer of 2020.
